🌍 Geography in Year 2

In Year 2, our Geography learning focuses on developing children's understanding of the world around them — starting with our local area and expanding to the wider world.

🏙️ Local Area Study: Urban vs Rural

We begin the year by exploring and comparing urban and rural areas in and around Oldham, our nearest town. Children will study both Oldham Town Centre and the more rural areas of Castleshaw and Diggle, identifying key human and physical features of each location.

They will be encouraged to think critically about the similarities and differences between these places, using a range of vocabulary to describe what they see and learn.

🧭 Developing Map Skills

As part of our fieldwork and geographical skills development, children will:

• Learn how to read and interpret simple maps

• Use directional language (left, right, near, far, etc.)

• Understand and apply the four main compass points (North, South, East, West)

• Use these skills to plan their own journey through a local area

We will also make use of atlases, maps, and globes to build global awareness and learn to identify:

• The seven continents

• The five oceans of the world

📚 Cross-Curricular Links

While some Geography learning will take place in dedicated lessons, we also look for opportunities to make meaningful links across the curriculum. For example, children may apply their geographical knowledge during writing, art, or science lessons.
